Reviving a Community Landmark in Thornbury

Sanderson Weatherall is proud to have supported the transformation and reopening of The Armstrong, formerly Armstrong Hall, in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire.

Once a thriving cultural hub for the local community, the venue hosted theatre productions, music performances, festivals, comedy acts and community events for decades. Following its closure during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the building remained dormant, leaving a significant gap in the cultural life of the town.

Thanks to the commitment of local volunteers, charitable support and a generous private donation, plans were developed to breathe new life into the venue and create a vibrant, accessible destination for future generations.

Project Overview

The Brief

The brief centred on restoring the building’s role as a community-focused arts and performance venue while improving its functionality, accessibility and visitor experience.

A key objective was to create a welcoming entrance sequence that would encourage greater public engagement and provide the flexibility needed to support a diverse programme of performances, events and social activities.

The project also required careful consideration of the building’s existing structure and heritage, balancing modern interventions with respect for its established character and importance within the local community.

Our Role

Acting as Project Manager, Building Surveyor and Contract Administrator, Sanderson Weatherall coordinated the delivery of the refurbishment works from concept through to completion.

We brought together the project team, stakeholders and contractors to achieve a successful outcome. The project team worked collaboratively to overcome technical problems and ensure that valuable fundraising was spent wisely.

The project was delivered in time for the grand opening and on budget.

Community Impact

The reopening of The Armstrong represents far more than a building refurbishment. It marks the return of an important cultural and social asset to Thornbury.

Operated by a dedicated team of volunteers, the venue provides a platform for local theatre groups, musicians, community organisations and event organisers who have been without a permanent home since the building’s closure.

The revitalised venue now includes The Foyer, an 80-capacity social and event space, and The Cossham Hall, a flexible 150-capacity performance venue.

Looking Ahead

As The Armstrong begins a new chapter, it stands as an excellent example of what can be achieved through collaboration, community commitment and a shared vision.

Sanderson Weatherall is delighted to have played a role in bringing this much-loved venue back into active use, helping to restore a valuable community asset that will continue to serve Thornbury for many years to come.

The renovation and re-opening of The Armstrong has revitalised community involvement in a wide range of performance and arts activities. 3 months since we have seen a diverse usage from young children through to the more elderly in our area for a range of events from amateur shows to professional performances. There is already evidence of improved social well-being, participation, and a reversing of the adverse impacts since covid. Former groups that had no venue to use have reformed and we are seeing new groups and organisations forming. We have a rewarding level of bookings moving forward, proof that the high-quality renovations have proven successful.
