Private Residence

Reorganization of existing spaces to maximise views and connections with the garden.

  • Domestic
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Architecture / Interior design
  • Private
  • £120,000

This project comprises of the reorganization of existing rooms of a domestic property in Newcastle upon Tyne into a large modern super room. The interior of the existing property was dark with little connection to the outside world and limited access to the gardens. Through remodelling the interiors and providing a simple canopy connecting the wings of the building together we were able to create a striking piece of contemporary architecture that blends the inside and outside spaces together.

The use of the linking canopy helps to simplify the fussiness of the existing elevation and through the use of large sliding doors with minimal frames allows maximum penetration of light into the new super room and uninterrupted views into the garden.

The Black Bull, Etal

New lease of like brought to existing thatched country pub.

  • Pub/Restaurant refurbishment
  • Etal Village, Northumberland
  • Architecture / Planning Services / cost consultancy
  • Ford and Etal Estates
  • £350,000

The Black Bull in Etal is an existing thatched pub in the picturesque Village of Etal on the Scottish border. Following the departure of the previous tenant in 2016 our client Ford and Etal estates approached us to see what could be done with the existing layout to transform the pub into modern bar and restaurant accommodation. Our proposals seek to reconfigure and rationalise the existing uses of the building to minimise circulation and maximise front of house space. Through careful consideration of the requirements for covers throughout the year our design allows the future tenants to cater for peak demand for space in the Summer and reduced demand in the winter months.

The building is currently on site and due for completion in June.

Nun Street

Creative reuse in the heart of the city centre.

  • Residential Apartment Conversion
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Architecture/ Planning Services / listed building consent
  • Grainger Derivatives
  • £500,000

15-21 Nun Street is a 3 storey, classically proportioned, grade I listed terraced building forming the southern elevation of the Grainger Market in Newcastle City Centre. Built in 1835 for Richard Grainger by John Dobson the building is currently occupied by retail uses on the ground floor with limited office use above. The majority of the upper floors have sat empty for a number of years.

As with most small floor plate office buildings 15-21 Nun Street does not lend itself to ongoing use as office accommodation given the lack of demand for tenancies of this type with the majority of incoming tenants seeking grade” A” office space with larger floor plates. Our proposals seek to breathe new life into these neglected spaces through refurbishment of the upper floors (including the attic space) as modern one and two bedroom apartments.

The Canteen Block, RTC Derby

Industrial canteen facilities designed to minimise cost in use.

  • Canteen/Refectory Refurbishment
  •  Derby
  • Architecture/Interior Design Services
  • London and Continental Railways Limited
  • £600,000

The RTC in Derby is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment and remodelling work and has benefited from a pro-active client who has sought to keep the estate in a modern condition that is capable of being adapted to current market demands.

As part of the estate capital expenditure one of the latest buildings to be reconfigured is the canteen block which is now providing conference facilities at ground level and canteen facilities and support spaces at upper floor level. SW architecture were appointed to provide a fit-out service for the new canteen area that was capable of handling a large influx of people at peak times along with creating an environment that maximises the buildings existing features.

Our approach to the design was to celebrate the existing features of the building and to maximise flexibility and minimise cost in use. The industrial feel of the building, coupled with a robust palette of new materials and furniture ensures that the design is capable of standing up to daily churn of a modern canteen facility.

Innovate House

  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Architecture / Interior design / Building consultancy
  • Greggs PLC
  • £800,000

SW Architecture were appointed to carry out scheme design and project management of the refurbishment and replacement of staff facilities at one of Greggs main head office sites. The services provided were dedicated to improving the work environment for staff through an enhanced office setting and dedicated break out areas.

The original tired open plan office spaces were given a new lease of life with corporate Gregg’s colours, designated informal meeting areas, private meeting rooms and collaborative spaces. The design builds upon our previous success with Greggs in fitting out the Q9 Head office.

Alan Shearer Centre

Luxury hydrotheraphy pool designed for specialist respite, residential and social facility for people with complex disabilities

Our building consultancy and architecture teams designed and developed the luxury hydrotherapy pool facility for the centre, working alongside specialist pool designers and occupational therapists.

The pool includes a number of water features designed to provide sensory experiences to users, including a Jacuzzi, under water swim jets, massaging water shoot and alight up waterfall feature. A flexible lighting design provides users with the option to change the atmosphere within the pool area, ranging from bright lights or a sensory environment.

To support the luxury hydrotherapy pool facility we also created a fully accessible changing room with access to the pool via a hoist system and a shower trolley and body dryer to enhance the user experience.

The Alan Shearer Centre Hydrotheraphy Pool, which opened in 2016, won a Gold SPATA award for ‘Special Requirement Pool of the Year’.

Lifton House

  • Commercial
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Architecture / Interior design
  • GMB
  • £1,500,000.00
  • Rationalise, contextualise, occupy, extend

Lifton House is a late Victorian villa set within the Brandling village conservation area of Jesmond on a traffic island between Jesmond Parish Church and the Jesmond Metro Station. During the 1960’s an unsympathetic extension was created in the former grounds of Lifton House along with modern dormers to the second floor level which completely dominates the context of the existing villa. Lifton House is currently sitting empty following the departure of the previous tenant 1.5 years ago.

Our proposals are for a two phase development of Lifton House intended to provide a new lease of life for the existing building and to contextualise the previous extensions that have been added to the building. Phase 1 of the proposals is to remove the majority of the 1960s extension including the top flight of the circulation staircase and then re-clad the reception area and remaining stair core in a simplified palette of materials more in context with the setting. Phase two of the development will create a two-storey extension sited on the former 1960s extension to house the future growth requirements of GMB.
