Sunderland footbridge moving forward as centrepiece of Sunderland’s Riverside Regeneration

Richard Farr / 15 Dec, 20

Labelled as one of the most ambitious city centre regeneration projects in the UK, Riverside Sunderland is a 33hectare site with the River Wear running through the centre.

Sunderland Council has now approved the preferred design for the bridge which will connect Sunderland City Centre with the Stadium of Light.

The wider project will deliver 1,000 new homes across four riverside neighbourhood, a school, nursery, more than one million square feet of modern offices and a development site for a life sciences / healthcare facility among many other fantastic amenities.

Sanderson Weatherall have been involved with the scheme since its inception in 2006, providing Sunderland City Council with assistance in route selection, preparation of site acquisition budgets and acquisition of land and buildings affected by the routes.

The scheme is expected to be completed in stages across the next ten years and at the heart of it will be the two new bridges.

Following competitive tender our compulsory purchase team has been instructed to begin assembling the site for the footbridge which includes applying for an easement from The Crown, as the riverbed and airspace above is owned by The Royal Family.
