Meet Gemma Watson

Gemma Watson / 20 Feb, 20

Gemma Watson is a graduate surveyor in our London office. Gemma is originally from South Africa, where she studied for four years before moving to London to complete her qualification and become an RICS Chartered Surveyor.

Tell us a bit about how you got into surveying…

I studied for a property degree in Cape Town, South Africa for four years, where I realised the importance of getting my RICS Qualification, as it opens so many doors. I realised that I would have the best opportunity to fulfil this dream in London. I was fortunate in that my fellow University friend, Jacques, was already at SW and I thought there would be no better way to complete my APC than at a firm with a solid reputation and with the added benefit of having a fellow South African in the office!

What attracted you to apply at SW?

I moved to London and wanted to do my APC Pathway, I looked at the bigger firms, but what stood out for me at SW is that I could be on a Graduate Program in a company that is smaller, creating a sense of belonging and close friendships within my job. I love coming to work and spending time with colleagues, who have now become friends, a quality I don’t think one would get from a larger firm.

What is your favourite building and why?

The Fortnum & Mason Building in Piccadilly. I love the magnificent architecture of this building and think it is absolutely beautiful, I also love the in-store displays that change regularly. I am a huge Fortnum fan and I have been known to spend hours wandering around the store trying all the tasters on a Sunday (basically a free lunch!)

“I don't really have an 'average day' I love the variety that comes with my job; not only does this type of work keep me on my toes and interested in what I am doing, but it removes the mundane 9 to 5 feeling so often experienced in other jobs where one counts the hours until home time.

Each day is different, with a lot of time spent on site inspections - I very seldom have a full day at my desk! This is also a great way to fit in some exercise and get much needed fresh air on a daily basis. ”

What’s one of the most interesting things you’re working on at the moment?

I have recently started working in the Valuations Team and have found it so interesting understanding the processes that go into valuing a property and the considerations entailed when placing a value on a property (many of which I would never have thought of) – I am excited to fully engage with the process and one day I hope to become an expert in the field!

What social opportunities have you had at SW?

I love the people I work with and the inclusive nature of my colleagues. I enjoy post work drinks on a Friday at The Phoenix- it’s great to wind down after a long week and see a different, relaxed side of one another. The Bike Ride was also a huge highlight; although exhausting this was such a fun experience filled with many laughs and lasting memories.

Outside of SW & Property, what do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Coming from South Africa, I love the outdoors – going for walks and runs with friends followed by a delicious meal is one of my favourite things to do. However, London weather doesn’t always “play ball”, so brunch with friends is also great! I love to travel, try new experiences and spend time with friends.

What three words would you use to describe SW?

Exciting, Challenging & Welcoming.
