Gemma Watson is a graduate surveyor in our London office. Gemma is originally from South Africa, where she studied for four years before moving to London to complete her qualification and become an RICS Chartered Surveyor.
Tell us a bit about how you got into surveying…
I studied for a property degree in Cape Town, South Africa for four years, where I realised the importance of getting my RICS Qualification, as it opens so many doors. I realised that I would have the best opportunity to fulfil this dream in London. I was fortunate in that my fellow University friend, Jacques, was already at SW and I thought there would be no better way to complete my APC than at a firm with a solid reputation and with the added benefit of having a fellow South African in the office!
What attracted you to apply at SW?
I moved to London and wanted to do my APC Pathway, I looked at the bigger firms, but what stood out for me at SW is that I could be on a Graduate Program in a company that is smaller, creating a sense of belonging and close friendships within my job. I love coming to work and spending time with colleagues, who have now become friends, a quality I don’t think one would get from a larger firm.
What is your favourite building and why?
The Fortnum & Mason Building in Piccadilly. I love the magnificent architecture of this building and think it is absolutely beautiful, I also love the in-store displays that change regularly. I am a huge Fortnum fan and I have been known to spend hours wandering around the store trying all the tasters on a Sunday (basically a free lunch!)
