How a new office space transformed the way we work

Mark Sheridan / 12 Nov, 19

Mark Sheridan, Head of our Bristol office, talks about our recent office move and how the new space has transformed our business.

“Despite only making the relatively short journey (down two flights of stairs!) to the first floor of 30 Queen Square, in just six months our newly refurbished new office has changed the team dynamic, the way we work and facilitated our continued growth.

“We settled down in Queen Square just over 5 years ago now and as a business we haven’t looked back since. It’s a fantastic location for us, close to Bristol’s thriving business community and within walking distance of all the city’s excellent retail and leisure offerings!

“We spend more time in our workplace than anywhere else. There’s no doubt we are all influenced by our surroundings and feeling proud of where you work ultimately impacts the work you produce. I think the new, higher specification office re-energised our surveyors, which strengthened us as a team and as a leading local and national firm.

“The office move was largely driven by a desire to occupy better specified accommodation to allow us to continue or growth and enable smarter and more agile ways of working. Drawing upon our internal building consultancy and architecture teams we were able to create an office space that looks great and performs all the functions that we need it to.

“The Bristol property market is a really exciting one to work in at the moment with a number of new developments providing residential, student, leisure and Grade A offices across the city, and in the wider South West Region. From the office our team offer our full range of our property services with particular specialisms including valuation, property management, investment agency, planning and building consultancy services. The team are also well placed to offer any of the firm’s broader property services, including those of our caravan and holiday park leisure specialists, also based in the South West.”

Moving office is a big venture for any business, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Here’s a whistle stop tour from our relocation team on how to handle the entire process from the day you decide to move.

1. Whether its size, location, cost or just wanting a new environment, evaluate why you want to move and set some objectives. It will help you think clearly throughout the relocation process, especially when choosing the building and space that’s right for you.

2. Talk to people within your business and get the right people on board from the outset. By listening to your colleagues’ opinions and working them into your relocation plan, you’ll reduce the chances of facing internal barriers.

3. When you’ve found a space you like, identify any potential issues with the building by undertaking a due diligence survey. Check the space can safely fit the number of people in your business, and that it complies with health and safety regulations.

4. With a competitive market, landlords are unlikely to wait around, so once you’ve chosen your space, you’ll need to move at a good pace to secure it.

5. Think about what sort of environment you want to create for your staff, and how to integrate technology and changes in the way people work into your new space. Create a space to inspire and engage staff, encourage a better sense of culture and community, and boost productivity.

A well designed fit out can also ensure you use your new space efficiently, and contribute to the day to day smooth running of your business.

6. Once you’ve settled into your new office, keep an eye on your occupational costs and identify where you may be able to make ongoing cost reductions.
