Case Study: Hartlepool Borough Council

Marketing / 10 Sep, 14

Sanderson Weatherall are instructed by Hartlepool Borough Council in connection with their business rates for both the 2005 and 2010 rating lists. Our brief is to mitigate the rates liability of the Council and this involves dealing with a variety of specialist property such as theatres, schools, bus stations, car parks, museums, leisure centres, markets and libraries, as well as more usual classes of property such as offices and industrial premises.

We have reviewed the property portfolio of Hartlepool Borough Council and carefully selected which properties we believed an advantage would be gained by placing an appeal against the rateable value set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). We then negotiated with the VOA to bring the appeals to settlement, if necessary we would have taken appeals to Valuation Tribunal if agreement could not have been reached with the VOA.

An average reduction in rateable value overall of 10.3% has been achieved as a result of the 2005 Rating List Appeals, and we have been successful in securing the client over £650,000 worth of savings for this period.
